I belive the FAA (Fleet Air Arm) flew them to protect the ships coming across and hunt for E-boats.

This is such a beautiful image! You are making me jealous that I had to miss it. Love that moody sky!

Cheers fella, I'm having real trouble balancing this types of shot, the plane always seems to be slightly off being in the right place in the frame.

It really depends on what you are looking for in your image. If you were trying to balance the shot so it is centred, I would say you need a little more cut off of the right hand side and also a centimeter or so off the bottom too. However I think this shot works really well as you have cropped it here, it's not centred but it is dynamic. With that little bit of room in front of the aircraft you have really caught the motion well. As if it's diving in for a strafing run on an unsuspecting enemy.

Cropping is a very difficult thing because some will say you should crop to one side like this, others will say it needs to be centred. Then you have the crop tight or crop loose argument too. I find that you can't please everybody so aim to please yourself. If you are happy then it is right, simple as that really.

Well it sounds like i have achieved the aimed for effect. to be honest it's between these type of shots and helicopters that I am really struggling with at the moment.

Your spot on, I can't count the number of times I have re cropped a shot because it no longer looked right.
